Image: A small, angry boy stands in front of his parents. They are in modern clothes, but he is dressed as a regency gentleman with top hat, breeches, cane etc. He says "No title, no estates, and less than a thousand a year! How am I ever to find a wife!" The Truth About Sea Level

From: pbsterra

Wait… sea level isn’t level? The ocean’s surface can vary by feet, thanks to wind patterns, rotating currents, and Earth’s spin. From water piling up in the subtropics to dips near the poles, and even storm surge during hurricanes, the ocean is constantly shifting to balance pressure. Our friend Paige explains it best!

This was interesting enough that I can almost forgive her pronunciation of "Coriolis"

In Expanding de Sitter Space, Quantum Mechanics Gets Even More Elusive

In theory, a universe can come in any shape or size, but scientists prefer to think about three basic kinds of universes: one that’s expanding, one that’s collapsing, and one that stays the same. Out of these three simplified models, an expanding universe is the hardest for physicists to understand. Yet it’s exactly the one our real world most resembles. When physicists calculate what’s going on…

Tangent question that's been bothering me: in the Netherlands, if you write down someone's surname without the first name, you'd capitalize the first "tussenvoegsel" (see wiki link), so we'd say De Sitter, not de Sitter. But since English doesn't have that kind of "interstitional name" people don't do that, you you end up with de Sitter. Now, if we're talking about an American or Englishman who happens to have Dutch heritage, sure, but I wonder if for someone like Willem de Sitter, who actually was Dutch, it wouldn't make more sense to follow Dutch convention? Because as a rule of thumb we would usually follow the spelling conventions of a person's native country when it comes to their name, right?

How much is an actual buttload?

From: Storied

This is how a “buttload” went from medieval wine barrels to modern slang—and why it’s literally hundreds of gallons more than you probably imagined.

Hosted by Dr. Erica Brozovsky, Otherwords is a PBS web series on Storied that digs deep into this quintessential human trait of language and finds the fascinating, thought-provoking, and funny stories behind the words and sounds we take for granted. Incorporating the fields of biology, history, cultural studies, literature, and more, linguistics has something for everyone and offers a unique perspective on what it means to be human.

Otherwords is a production of Spotzen for PBS Digital Studios.
